Contact: Laurie W. Anderson or Jennifer Dykes, Anderson & Associates Public Relations, Inc., 303-758-1118 Literacy Group Updates Its Name and Logo, Launches Website LAKEWOOD, CO -- Oct. 24, 2001 -- To better represent the students it serves, the 37-year-old Organization has changed its name and logo to "The Learning Source for Adults and Families." The organization is located at 455 S. Pierce St. in the former Villa Library. "Over time, the demographics of our students have changed," explains Mary Moser, president of the Board. "For a number of years, we have been aware that we are serving more families than adults. We expect this trend to continue in our organization and in the communities we serve in the future. "Our mission continues to be 'to provide opportunities for motivated adult learners and families to attain their educational goals through adult and family literacy, GED preparation and English instruction'," Moser explains. "We feel this change to our name helps us as an organization focus on fulfilling that mission." On Nov. 1, in celebration of National Family Literacy Day, The Learning Source for Adults and Families will dedicate a new sign for its building, featuring the new name and logo. Several local groups contributed the funds to create the sign through the efforts of the Leadership Jefferson County -- 1st Bank, Citizens for Lakewood's Future and the Alameda Gateway Community Association. The organization's new website also is online at www.coloradoliteracy.org. Since 1964, The Learning Source for Adults and Families has been providing adult basic education, GED preparation and English language acquisition classes for adults in the metro Denver area. Since 1989, the organization has been in the forefront of the development of family literacy programs that have been recognized by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and the National Center for Family Literacy in Louisville, Ky. Last year, in partnership with the Aurora Public Schools, The Learning Source for Adults and Families was granted one of 15 Toyota Families in Schools grants to bring family literacy into schools with high populations of non-native English-speaking children. In November 2000, the organization welcomed a fourth family literacy program that was formerly housed at Stein Elementary School. The program now operates in Lakewood as the Villa Family Literacy Center. In August 2001, The Learning Source for Adults and Families partnered with Montview Elementary School in Aurora to open its fifth family literacy program as part of a Colorado Reading Excellence Act project at the school.
