The Adult Learning Source Hires New Volunteer Coordinator

LAKEWOOD, CO--Sept. 18, 2001 -- Thomas M. Oatts has been hired as the new volunteer coordinator for The Learning Source for Adults and Families (ALS).

Oatts has served as a volunteer with ALS since 1988. For his first 10 years with ALS, Oatts served as a volunteer tutor. Over the past three years, he has served as a lead teacher at the Denver County Jail, Goodwill Industries and the Lowry Redevelopment Authority. Oatts has also volunteered at Denver Human Services, the Colorado Women's Employment and Education center and various other English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Educational Development (GED) sites.

"Tom's experience with ALS as a volunteer provides him a unique perspective to serve as our volunteer recruiter," says Susan Lythgoe, executive director of ALS. "We are very excited that he has taken this position with us."

As volunteer coordinator, Oatts will recruit volunteers by developing and fostering community contacts, provide tutor orientations, and place volunteers in various ALS sites.

Last year, Oatts received the Goodwill Industries of Denver "Instructor of the Year" Award and in 1999, he received the Colorado Department of Education's award, "For Outstanding Commitment to Excellence".

Established in 1964, ALS provides opportunities for motivated adults and families to attain educational goals through literacy programs, GED and English instruction.

For more information about volunteering or ALS's programs, call The Learning Source for Adults and Families at 303-937-1980.
